Formal Agreements secure GKN Aerospace’s new Global Technology Centre at Filton

Executives from GKN Aerospace with joint venture partners St Francis Group and iSec recently met on the site of the proposed £32m Global Technology Centre at Horizon 38, Filton to formally mark the exchange of the agreement for lease.

This marks the final step before a start on site can be made later this month on the new technology centre which is designed as a hub for world class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft.

Also attending the event was Cllr Toby Savage leader of South Gloucestershire Council together with Cllr Brian Allinson Vice Chair of South Gloucestershire Council. – the authority within which Horizon 38, a hugely successful brownfield regeneration project is located.

Speaking at the occasion Gareth Williams of St Francis Group representing the developer joint venture said: “It’s very poignant to today be standing here with GKN Aerospace to look across the site of the new global technology centre. With such a rich heritage of aviation, aerospace and engineering industry in the region we are very pleased to be welcoming GKN Aerospace to Horizon 38 and upholding that history”

Leader of South Gloucestershire Council with Cabinet responsibility for Skills and Employment Cllr Toby Savage said: “We welcome this state-of-the-art new facility in South Gloucestershire and it’s great to see progress made today with the lease agreement exchanged. The Global Technology Centre will help our area remain at the forefront of the innovative worldwide aerospace industry. It will also provide around 300 highly skilled engineering jobs for the local workforce as well as helping to inspire our young people to pursue careers in STEM.”

The Global Technology Centre at Horizon38, which is expected to open in 2020, will be leased to GKN Aerospace on completion and will extend to 117,000 sq ft (10,872 sq m) on a site of 7.3 acres fronting onto the A38 in South Gloucestershire. It will consist of 46,252 sq ft of Grade A office space over four floors and a research and development area of another 67,188 sq ft in two distinct areas, with an emphasis on the provision of an inspiring high-quality working environment.

Horizon38 is part of the East Works Masterplan Development, a site acquired by St Francis and iSec in December 2015 from Rolls-Royce where around £50m has already been invested in a range of speculative industrial warehouse units and site wide infrastructure.

In the early 1940’s Rolls-Royce began operations at the site in Filton which involved the manufacture and repair of aircraft engines. Rolls-Royce consolidated its operations onto the Gipsy Patch North site which released East Works for a new mixed-use development.
